Privacy -- with a Breeze

It's nice to have privacy inside your boat, but closing the cabin door cuts off air circulation -- and so do regular curtains.

A curtain of white nylon or Dacron mosquito netting, however, can give you protection from both dockside strollers and no-see-'em gnats.

Make the curtain to fit the hatch or door opening, with wide hems at the top and bottom to hold batten stiffeners, which will hold the curtain across the width of the door. At each lower corner, secure the bottom batten by adding a small cup hook on the door frame. I use shock cord to hold the top of the curtain in place, allowing easy entry by simply pushing the curtain aside.

The key to the project, however, is to aim a spotlight from inside the boat at the hatch curtain, whenever you want privacy. An adjustable light near my cabin door can be pointed toward the hatch and, lit from inside, the screen turns an opaque white -- even at midday -- giving privacy without stopping the air circulation aboard.
